I'm making a thread for CES 2020 because I know we will want to discuss it but we don't want to litter the Android thread with talks of TVs and sex toys.

Official site: https://www.ces.tech/

January 7-10

Las Vegas, NV

A couple of links speculating/previewing what to expect:

https://www.cnet.com/news/ces-2020-preview/

Personally, if it hasn't already been known, I'm really looking at TVs and new stuff in the smart home sector. One thing that I read about in the previews that I didn't know before is that there is going to be a big emphasis on health and wellness this year. I know it's something we've been doing at the clinic for the past two years and it was pretty cutting edge, fresh, etc. when my dad, and eventually I, got in to it but it has really taken off in the past year. One of the articles described it as reversing the addiction to screens that tech created over the past decade. Interesting way to put it and I agree, but the whole "wellness" field is so much more than just how we use tech. So I'm excited to see what all the introduce, as well as new fitness tech like the smartwatches and fitness trackers.

i know I personally made huge gains when I utilized the combination of my Jawbone UP2 and MyFitnessPal a few years ago and dropped a ton of weight in the span of 7 weeks. The UP died a few months after and I slowly let MFP fade away. It's a bit of a shame that a dinky, $50 device and a free tracking service was the difference between getting on and falling off the wagon but, hey, it's helped a lot more people a lot more than it helped me, so if it works, why not?

So just TVs and the smart home and fitness stuff is what I'm really interested in. I'll try to keep tabs on most of the big news from other areas of the convention but those are really just the main ones I'm really interested in.

Hopefully this thread can last us until the next CES in a year where we can just talk about tech introduced next week and its implementation throughout the year.

TVs

https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/05/samsung-2020-8k-tv-atsc-3-tuners/?guccounter=1

New Sony TVs: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/01/06/ces-2020-tvs-homekit-airplay-2/

LG coming out with a 48" OLED: https://www.trustedreviews.com/news...=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1578355432

Vizio with the OLED: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/5/21049756/vizio-new-4k-tvs-oled-p-series-quantum-x-ces-2020

@masta247 You said Vizio was sort of shat upon by TV enthusiasts, for reliability/quality. And I haven't seen many users on forums recommend them, but sites like RTings do have some Vizio recommendations as budget picks. I think they're the "Quantum" models, which are supposed to be the high end models of Vizio's lineup.

I wonder if this venture in to OLED means they are getting serious about competing with the big boys.

Chromebooks:

Samsung's: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/6/2...-release-date-hands-on-chrome-os-photos-video

Wonder what @Casey thinks about the pricing. I think he's the only one here that owns/uses a Chromebook.

Goddamn, this looks cool: https://www.techradar.com/reviews/lg-gallery-gx-oled-tv

But is going to be so expensive and that's not including getting professional installation on top of it.

Crazy to hear the E series is discontinued in favor of this. Crazy because that should mean that retailers will be seeing the prices on these drop like rocks soon and I really liked the looks of it, as well as the sound bar, but got swayed away because of the price tag. I think it would be best for my parents, so they don't need to get the separate sound bar nor worry about calibrating all of it. And it looks cool, that's the big thing about the E series. Real minimalist look.

It's the new 7nm architecture that Masta mentioned about 4 months ago. I think I will get a PC (or maybe even a Windows laptop now) with the Ryzen 4000 series.

I think I want either one of the following options:
- A very good Ryzen 5 desktop and a mid-range Chromebook.
- A very good Ryzen 5 Windows laptop with a docking station connected to a monitor, and a budget 2-in-1 Chromebook laptop or tablet.

It's really been a year since I made this thread. Felt like only a couple of months ago.

I saw LG introduced even smaller OLEDs at 42", probably for those who like to use OLED monitors for their computer.

Dumb question but do we see new CPUs announced during CES or is it mainly finished products like appliances? I don't know the update cycle of CPUs and I know we just had new GPUs unveiled from both AMD and Nvidia. But are we at the point where we see AMD take another leap ahead of Intel this year?

AMD might release new 5000 series mobile chips. Intel is pre-annoucing 11th Gen CPUs as a "I'm still here" move. Namely Rocket Lake, yet another generation based on their old 14nm process. At least the architecture is changing for the first time since 2016, but considering how many years they've been stuck on the same thing and this being the first time it's changing in 5 years, a very small performance improvement at 11-19%. That's a similar gain to what AMD achieved year over year with Zen 3 over Zen 2.

Intel's Rocket Lake is being rushed to market - Jayztwocents today said he's got sources saying they're rushing them so much that there are serious stability/quality issues in actual launch SKUs. These chips will also run scorching hot at 14nm compared to AMD's 7nm chips. Also, based on Intel's marketing materials they will at best catch up in single core performance with AMD, while maxing out at half the cores (desktop i9 will have 8 while Ryzen 9 comes with 16). The main reason they're launching these chips is so they can say they have chips that are again on par in gaming with AMD's latest chips, since games rarely use more than 8 cores and single core performance will be similar, albeit at much more power needed.

I didn't realize Intel had been that lazy for almost a decade. I think some time ago you mentioned that there wasn't that much of a difference between 2010 Core 2 Duos and some of the more recent offerings of the i7s or i9s. Maybe you were talking size or difference in architecture? Because I had a 2010 13" MBP with, I think, Sandy Bridge. It was a C2D and then 7 years later I upgraded to the Kaby Lake i7 2.8Ghz. I thought I remembered you saying that despite being 7 years apart, there wasn't 7 years of performance between them, or any other CPU between the lineups.

I think I did see headlines about new Ryzen 5000s, like you said, for mobile. That'll be interesting.

Actually, I just re-checked. https://www.anandtech.com/show/16405/amd-launches-ryzen-5000-mobile-zen-3-and-cezanne-for-notebooks

Also, Samsung announced the Exynos update: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16316/samsung-announces-exynos-2100

And then they teased the Samsung-AMD project that's been in the works for 2+ years. https://9to5google.com/2021/01/12/samsung-amd-gpu-teaser-next-flagship/

That sounds like it should be a big deal for Samsung and has my attention. I think it will be bigger for those who game on mobile and I can also see it being a feature for the "Ultra" models, meaning $1200+ to get it. If that's the case, it'll be another blunder by Samsung, or just a feature that won't mean much to those who don't even know what it means. Kind of like me lol. Or in my case, someone who doesn't game on mobile but still chases specs.
