Twenty-four hours after teasing us with news of a major product announcement, Nokia officially took the wraps off its mystery smartphone on Tuesday at the Nokia World 2008 Conference in Barcelona, Spain. And despite some close guesses, no one got it quite right so without further ado, let us introduce you to the Nokia N97.

Part of the company's high-end N series of multimedia computers, the N97 trumps all previous models with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and a tilting 3.5-inch touch screen (anyone else reminded of the AT&T Tilt or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1?). Yes, there's the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but the N97 includes phone capabilities and is designed for the "needs of Internet-savvy consumers."

For example, the smartphone provides easy access to a number social networking sites and the Web browser supports streaming Flash videos. The N97 also introduces something Nokia calls "social location," which uses the capabilities of the integrated A-GPS sensors and electronic compass to automatically update your social networks or let you share your location via photos or videos with friends. The Home screen can be personalized with widgets of favorite Web and social networking sites. Finally, the N97 is fully compatible with Nokia's Ovi Internet services, which include the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and the N-Gage gaming platform--though these services have yet to fully launch in the United States.

The Symbian-based smartphone also features a music and video player, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and a whopping 32GB of onboard memory that can be expanded with a 16GB microSD card. The quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone is HSDPA-capable handset, but currently only supports the 900/1900/2100MHz bands (AT&T's 3G network runs on 850/1900MHz while T-Mobile runs on 1700/2100MHz). There is integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, however.

The Nokia N97 is expected to ship in Europe during the first half of 2009 with an estimated price of 550 Euros ($695 U.S.). As Crave reader UKStory1355 humorously and astutely noted in our blog post yesterday, "Like it matters to U.S. citizens, we won't see it for 18 months anyway," there is no official word on when we'll see the N97 stateside. Heck, we're still waiting for the Nokia N96. Of course, there's always the possibility of buying the smartphone unlocked and who knows, maybe Nokia will surprise us.

Obviously, the Nokia N97 takes a jab at other popular touch-screen smartphones, namely the Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, and RIM BlackBerry Storm, but will it succeed? It certainly has the substance and style to take on the big boys, but will it go the way of the Xperia X1 where the lack of a U.S. carrier and a high price tag will severely limit its adoption in the States? Either way, we think it looks like a pretty sweet device and we're looking forward to having some personal hands-on time with the Nokia N97. Speaking of which, CNET Executive Editor David Carnoy was on hand at Nokia's flagship store in New York to get a sneak peek at the smartphone and grabbed some video, which we'll upload tomorrow. For now, I'd love to hear your initial thoughts on the Nokia N97.

Yeah, there's a lot of hype around this one, and I have to admit, the design is killer.

Unfortunately, the S60 operating system still sucks ass, so no thanks.

Nokias are not as good any more. They are expensive, not as reliable as before and worse than Sony Ericsson phones which are cheaper.
I won't buy any of those because they're too bulky but if I had to buy a huge ass phone it would be SE X1.

That's what i've always said and still say. My G1 is sick. :thumb:
I've heard good things about everything about it except for the AIM client which is supposed to be weak as fuck.

Danger are getting hit pretty hard with it, a lot of Sidekickers have migrated to the G1, including a lot of my friends in the US that have Sidekicks. It's an easy transition because the design is so similar, not to mention Andy Rubin who created the Sidekick is now the head of the Android OS.

But a lot of heavy AIM users are switching back because the Android AIM client is so poor. When it comes to Instant Messaging, there still is not a single device out there that can touch the Sidekick.

I'm still very very tempted to get a G1 though.

I disagree. The Blackberry Bold is much better for IM right now simply because I can run ALL clients on the phone, not just AIM/MSN or MSN/Yahoo like on the Sidekicks depending on location.

Im connected to MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Google Talk, Skype and BB Messenger on the Blackberry right now. I get an alert for each in one "Message" tab.

I am really really confident in saying that the Blackberry Bold absolutly shits on any phone I have ever had, and Ive had all the Sidekicks and iPhones and couple SE's and Nokias (e71).

Plus Casey, Ive got unlimited data on the Blackberry just like the Sidekick (for email, txt, mms, sms, IM, browsing, video, etc etc) AAANNNDDDD $500 worth of calls, and I could never get a call cap and a data pack together for the Sidekick.

I've read alot about the HTC Touch being great. But then again, I'm not in the market for a smartphone, or even a new phone in general. My Lg EnV is gay enough for me. I love the flip keyboard, which helps me stay connected to my friends through texting. And the camera and internet just make it so awesome. I love this gay little phone, and plan to keep it until my two year contract with Verizon is up next August. Yay....

If you want an unlocked G1, go here: http://market.android.com/publish

All you need is $25 to register as a developer and $399 to get the unlocked phone.
That doesn't appear to be neccesary anymore:

Convert your G1 to a Developer version in a few short steps : Boy Genius Report

and Rukas, I wasn't referring to what clients are available.

I mean the way the Sidekick IM clients operate is better than any other phone, because Danger have it copyrighted. Even Andy Rubin who founded Danger and had those ideas in the first place can't put them onto Android because Danger still owns the copyrights as a company.

What I'm referring to is the way the back-end servers keep you online when you have no signal and queue the messages to be pushed through when your signal returns. There's many other advantages to that system, but you know what I'm talking about. The clients are far more reliable than other other OS or device as well.

I do agree that international carriers like T-Mobile UK and Telstra dropped the ball by not including all the three standard clients from jump. In fact because I have a relationship with Danger and T-Mobile UK, I've been the hardest campaigner for them to sort that out.

But I have a developer key, so personally it doesn't bother me that much, I have things like Google Talk and Twitter on my Sidekick and a multitude of things that aren't and will never be available in the catalogue. I can also port any Java-based apps and games onto it with a few simple commands.

The Bold is nice though. I really dislike Blackberrys in general but the Bold is the best thing they've done so far.

As for you not being able to get a good call cap etc on your old Sidekick, that's another thing that's Telstra's fault. I have no doubt that Microsoft will sort all of these issues out now that they own Danger.

I've heard some rumors about the next Sidekick (codenamed M3 Blade which is interesting, because the Sidekick 2 was the M1 and the Sidekick 3 was the M2.....so the next Sidekick is effectively the Sidekick 4)

All of MS/Danger's carrier relationships are being renegotiated at the moment, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Oh yeah, one more thing Ruk, did your Bold ship with the Skype client? If not do you have a link to get it?

My manager was asking me if I could find one as he has a Bold, but on Vodafone it doesn't ship with it.
