Email is dead, long live Google Wave

I know that many people were unable to watch the 80minute video of Google announcing Google Wave at their IO conference earlier this year. Understandable, it's a lot of information to take it.

I, on the other hand, did watch the whole thing at the time, as new technologies fascinate me, and I like to stay ahead of the game.

Today is the day that Google will be sending out 100,000 invites to Google Wave. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones. Anyway, to break it down a little bit for the less technologically minded, here's a 10-minute overview of Wave. Obviously this only covers the main features of it, and the full introduction at the conference was very indepth. But here's the 10 minute version so you guys can begin to understand how revolutionary this is.

It's pretty tight. I don't like how others can see what you're typing, that's pretty weird. I'd love to use this on my phone ha. I like how you can do so much with one program. As far as it replacing e-mail I'm not so sure. This is really aimed towards business and talking to groups of people. It seems easy enough though that speaking to one person would work well with it. Once the 100,000 invites roll out what comes next? Is it just a beta version being used or what's up?

Yeah the only thing I'm not keen on is people seeing what you type as you write it. I hope there's the option to write something out, change it before you 'send' it in the wave in real time.

Cool that's it made in Sydney - some of the photos they used in picture sharing part of the demo were taken at my favourite local BBQ spot.

Thanks for sharing.

You can turn off the "real time" typing.

I just got my invite and I'm checking it out right now!

A nice idea that would appeal to many users but personally I just can't see myself using this.
There are similar group features on our instant messengers.

Same as masta. And I don't fully get it. I don't get why this is being launched as a new project because it's not that to me really. The only reason I didn't raise my hand and suggest someone has to make this, is I assumed that this was already invented.

I don't like that you can use this to log onto your twitter. Imagine the possibilities for hackers. I don't know how this technically works, but for you all to edit the same document real-time you have to have an open connection. What if a malicious script is being run on the wave you are on. Generally I don't understand why people are trying to get away from having to physically go to the website you are logging in to. It annoys me that they spend time to develop a program under google wave that can do exactly what the website it communicates with can do if you'd just type the url. Google want everyone to use all Google apps. Don't go to twitter, log on to twitter through a Google application! Apple may be liars trying to control their consumers, but fuck me if Google isn't too. The concept of this product is to not use other products because this one does it all. I don't buy that and it's a cocky business idea.

No, the concept of this product is essentially "Email is a 40 year old technology. What would it be like if it was invented today?".

And there you have it. You're missing the point, anyway. You're not supposed to use other websites via Google Wave. You embed, collate, edit, share, work with information in real time from any source that has an API.

You do realize that anybody can write an application that accesses Twitter via their API, right? That's what mobile and desktop Twitter apps do.

If you don't get it, do yourself a favor and watch this:

It's 80 minutes long, but it goes through every aspect and idea behind Wave.

It also completely obliterates your point about "Google trying to control people through a Google application" - because Google have opened up Wave to be used outside of "Google Wave".

Any company or any person can create their own Wave system using their own servers. It doesn't have to go through Google, at all. So therefore your point is invalid. Google are NOTHING like Apple because Apple would have locked this shit down and made it proprietary like everything else they do. Hell, Apple can use their own Wave servers if they want to!

The technology is there for taking, Google just happen to be the innovative people that invented it, but they're not such assholes that they would force everybody to use it through their systems and their servers.

So sorry Preach, everything you wrote is baloney.

Although I'm generally a stuck up dude when I'm arguing and it sounds like I think I'm right all the time (lol), I indeed agree that I just haven't understood why this is a big deal yet :p

Time for awkward honesty, I was pissed that you wouldn't let me enjoy my iPhone without telling me what scumbags Apple are, so I just had to get back at you. Fail. I'll try again with something else some other time haha :D

Will watch 80min video one day!

I don't see how this is a big deal either.

Sure it has some neat features that we already enjoyed on other programs all put into one but what's new and innovative about it ?

We are writing our new album using Wave. It's working perfectly. We can see who is contributing what, drop MP3's of melodies and ideas we've recorded into the wave, etc. It's making the collaborative process MUCH easier.

sounds like its going well.

i STILL havent managed to see the video yet, but how can it phase out email? if wave runs in real time, do all users have to be online at the same time?

No. I refuse to answer any more questions. Just watch the damn video.

And for the record, I've written more of the ideas we'll be recording for the new album than anyone else so far!
