The best part about having nukes isn't launching them, it's the leverage that they give you on the world stage because of the implications of having them. Also, in the case of Iran, the issue isn't that Ahmadinejad will launch them, it's that it opens the door of possibility for terrorist cells to attain them. That's one of the problems the US is having with Pakistan possessing nuclear weapons.
Also, there are three ways to exert influence as a nation in the world:
1. Economic power
2. Traditional military power
3. Nuclear arms
Nuclear weapons are a short cut.
Iran with nuclear weapons is a loose cannon scenario.
But as far as Israel goes, it's understandable. Iran doesn't believe in its legitimacy. Would you be comfortable that a country not so far away, that believes you shouldn't exist, has nukes?
