Im selling an item for the first time on ebay and i received an offer after a user with 0 feedback bought it using the "buy it now" option.

His address was in USA but the shipping address is in Nigeria. Sounds very fradulent to me.

On top of this, i receive an email from paypal which looks very legitamate. this is what the email says:

note: i have replaced the buyers name with "buyer" and some figures with "x".

the email had all the necessary graphics on the sides and said:

PayPal – The safer, easier way to receive payment

* Use your credit card without exposing your card number to merchants.

* Speed through checkout without stopping to enter your card number or address.

* Easily send money to family and friends.

Protect Your Password

* You should Never give your PayPal password to anyone, including PayPal employees.

* Make sure you with in 24 Hours to the address stated in this payment notification email.

now i know that in order to receive a shipment tracking order, you need to ship the item off first.

now when does anyone on ebay ship the item before they receive the payment. its just silly and doesnt make sense - and i know this because ive been a buyer on ebay several times. the buyer is supposed to make the payment before they receive the item through the post.

has anyone else experienced this?

also, if i were to cancel this transaction, report it to ebay and relist the item, would i be charged for listing the item twice?

i was so happy today as well because he sent me much more than the shipping i asked for and thought maybe he was illiterate or got confused with the exchange rates or something.

fraudulent. cancel that shit straight away.i believe if you report it to ebay they won't charge you again for relisting.

also, i suggest you put in your ebay auction "No zero feedback bidders, please". You might be able to set it as an option somewhere actually.

This is a huge SCAM...a pretty popular one too. They want you to send it out asap bc the credit card/paypal account they're using is not going to go through. They usually offer to pay extra/more than you're asking.

NEVA EVA do that :thumb:

That poor kid wont get his surprise gift for his bithday now just cos ur a racist.

Seriously tho, something like that happened to a friend of mine last month, he was selling his phone he got a legit looking email from paypal saying the money had been paid but he checked it out and it turned out to be a fraud.

yea i knew it was fraud as soon as it said nigeria (a different destination from USA).

he did offer to pay more. £20 more than the total price i calculated for him. i just thought id keep quiet and not tell him. i just wanted to believe it wasnt a scam and it was a non-fradulent user - but its not that straighforward and there are loads of people doing it.

i read a few similar stories on ebay forums.

thanks all.

besides, i knew someone would come out with the racist comment lol. i have some african in me too you know, just because i was born in england.... i have roots back in kenya.

i think i should email him back saying ive sent it and see his response. then i shall email him again to shoot his hopes down like he did to me on my first "sale", which actually hasnt even happened yet!

as you can tell im infuriated by this.

the only reason i like paypal is because its practically instant as soon as you accept, and extremely easy to use on the condition that there are no complications between seller and buyer.

i would never be so stupid to sent item out before i receive payment because that decision would lie in my hands and would be out of ebays control so therefore i would be at fault.

Did I mention that a Nigerian once told me that they teach people in Nigeria a course where they learn about scamming the system in the UK?

yea u love paypal for their convenience, till the day ur ready to say fuck everything and go back to ur old habits but u take a risk, and put all the money u got into a business and use paypal cuz u love their convinience, and ur doing well, boom ur selling like crazy, all ur money is in that paypal account, and u've sent out over 2 thousand dollars of merch, and they tell u, they want to randomly freeze ur funds till u can provide them with certain documentation.

You provide them with the documentation, and they say they'll wait for each of ur customers to receive their items before they unfreeze ur funds. And once all positive feedback is received, they say Fuck off anyways cuz we have the right to hold ur funds for 180 days, and we're going to exercise that right,

And u ask em on what basis they're holding on to ur funds, and they say, didnt we just tell u to fuck off, ur a fuckin nobody, we're paypal.. what the fuck are going to do? Take us to court? HA.. now go fuck urself, you'll have ur money in 180 days.. If you keep talking shit we'll just return the money you've rightfully earned back to the customers.

And u gotta sit there and think of ways to make ends meet, when all the money u had to ur name was invested into a business that u thought would be efficient and safe cuz paypal is a great company.

Fuck Paypal

ive seen many paypal groups about things like that, but the way you put it makes them seem very very akward.

dont they just withold funds only for large sums of money? they probably bank it and gain the interest on it before completing their own customers' transactions.

haha this just keeps on getting funny.

i emailed the so called "buyer" back saying ive shipped it out and i think he's become a bit suspicious because i didnt confirm the tracking number. ive kept quiet on that matter and today i receive an email from "ebay" saying:

Hello sandeep,

Thank you for writing back to eBay's Customer Support. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you regarding the email you received about your eBay account.

We have rigorously examined and confirmed that payment had been made by the buyer and deducted money from the buyer's account automatically for eBay safety transaction as a new member.

Due to new member Payment Policy with eBay market for safety transaction, money has been deducted from the buyer's account automatically which cannot be collected/refund back to the buyer, but waiting to be creditted into your account once we confirmed you have posted the item to the buyer's desired shipping address in Nigeria ONLY (Bolded/red font).

We would reiterate that you should proceed with the shipment without any excuses. Once we confirm the shipment information, money will be made into your account and we won't be billing you for the Final Valuation Fee on this transaction. This is to protect both seller and buyer of any new/first international transaction!

We strongly advise you to respond to any emails you receive from the buyer's without any excuses again. We are assuring you of the eBay safety ***YOU ARE SAFE AND SECURED***.

We do not want you to sell outside of the security of the eBay website. As you know, we strongly discourage buying and selling between eBay users outside eBay. Transactions completed outside of the eBay website are not covered by our Feedback system or buyer protection programmes.

We trust this information is helpful and wish you all the best for your future trading on eBay without SUSPENSION (Bolded/red font). Proceed with the shipment today. This measure is tested ok for resolving matters regarding safety of both parties involve in the eBay Market.

Sincerely,
eBay Trust & Safety

We would reiterate that you should proceed with the shipment without any excuses.
- haha, i've never known that eBay who practice customer service as a top priority would demand me to make a payment in such a way; i.e. without any excuses.

We strongly advise you to respond to any emails you receive from the buyer's without any excuses again. We are assuring you of the eBay safety ***YOU ARE SAFE AND SECURED***.
who do they think they are fooling? lol.

Notice the difference between the above email (fake) with the real ebay message below:

the fake ebay email from the scam tries so hard to make it sound like a real letter and sound intelligent by using words such as reiterate. they think they have made it sound realistic whereas the real ebay mails try to make the message easier to understand, friendly and a bit more fun to read and include some phrases too instead of words which many people would consider jargon.

Dear sandeep1403,
You've done it! You've sold your first item and it's making someone happy right now - and you've pocketed the cash.
The first time you sell is always the hardest but now you've learnt the ropes you'll be able to do it more easily next time.
Everyone has dozens of items in their homes that millions of eBay buyers want to get their hands on, so take a look around your house and list those items you're no longer using.
Regards
The eBay Team
