Man arrested in fatal hit-and-run 11:31 AM CST on Tuesday, February 22, 2005

Mesquite police have arrested a Garland man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Amanda Gore, 15, a North Mesquite High School student, died Monday evening after she was hit by a car in the 4100 block of Gus Thomasson Road.

The girl was crossing Gus Thomasson in the 2900 block of Whitson Way when she was hit by a 1996 Buick Regal around 4:30 p.m.

After an investigation, police said they identified the driver of the Regal as Everett Schmidt, 25, of Garland. Schmidt was arrested for failure to stop and render aid.

Mesquite police said it was the city's first traffic fatality of 2005.

all they arrested him on was "failure to render aid" ... umm how bout vehicular fuckin homicide?! Normally I'd just blow this off like "another fuckin idiot" but in this case, it was my g/f's cousin that was hit and killed so it pisses me off a little more than normal. I mean, he slams into this girl and kills her and drives away. Didn't stop to call the cops, nothing like that. Just kept fuckin driving and he's only charged with failure to render aid? YOU KILLED THE FUCKIN KID! Jesus, am i the only one that thinks he should get SOME type of murder charge?

no. Only reason i knew that the guy was even caught was the news and they said, plain as day "The man is only facing charges of failure to render aid the police say." reason being "since he was not speeding, he wasn't accountable for what happened" .. who cares if he was speeding or not, can you not see a fuckin human being in the street? That's one of the first things i'm looking for around every fuckin corner. First someone crossin the street, then a car. But since this man can get away with it, i was thinkin about killin about 18 of them bums that r always walkin out infront of my car in downtown. If i'm not speeding i can't be held accountable right? ... assholes

It used to be like that here in the UK - but about 7years ago they had a massive crackdown on any kind of car crime, in most cases they would get a good jail sentence here! pretty much on par with manslaughter me thinks!

Manslaughter should be the correct charge.. doesn't matter if he wasn't speeding. He obviously was not paying his full attention and was not aware of his surroundings. This guy is a complete fuck and he should be charged accordingly. I'm with you on this one Jocka.
