So, remember the meat eating debates?

Both of those articles are based on the same report, which shows a 500% increase in the US from 2014 till now. 1% identified as vegan in 2014 and now it's 6% of Americans. So the second article probably got mixed up by the 6% and said 600% instead of 500%. However, those numbers don't look like any other I've seen over the years. Gallup poll surveys are usually the most accurate. They had 2% vegan in 2008 and 3% in 2018. That's only a 1% rise in 10 years. Also, 5% say they are vegetarian, which hasn't really changed. The numbers might be a little more, but not by much. I don't know about the other countries.

This seems like the number of vegetarians actually decreased since 1999/2001 from 6% to 5%. That's interesting.

There are more vegetarian eateries and food options these days though.

They either died or they were eaten. But it is surprising that more people aren't vegetarian. But then you got the whole keto, paleo, low-carb craze pulling people the other way.

Thank you for typing this up for me. Was on mobile and couldnt.

In addition it’s a survey; one thing I’ve learned in my career is never trust surveys. People often answer what they wish they were rather than what they actually do in practice. They could also identify as vegan that month and not next.

It’s not an exact science, and generally when something becomes more popular or cool or hipster or edgy or whatever people are more likely to say they are it; you just have to look at all the people that identify as fitness enthusiests that are unhealthy or out of shape but it’s just the cool thing to do or they want to fit it.

I’m looking at you 80% of people with F45 memberships.

I’ll put non-smoker on a survey but go through a pack in a drunken night and then regret it lol

Yeah it’s loosing it’s cool factor.

I’m going paleo btw. Lol. Works for me to lose weight. Just motivates me not to eat out or eat processed food.

Lyds does that keto shit. She's lost 10 kilos since April. Works for her pretty well. I've lost 10 kilos since the start of the year from not eating 3 cheeseburgers a day

When I was heavily in the gym I’d cut on Keto. That shit works. But it’s brutal for me because I generally don’t like high fat food. I tend to do it for a month or so to finish a cut, but I can’t sustain it.

Biggest difference at this point and before is at this age diet becomes less of an option and more of a medically directed necessity. I'm eating pretty healthy these days.

Gained weight after I broke my leg playing hockey last year. I'm down 14lbs after starting F45 :p
Sounds like me after the motorcycle accident. Except I gained 15.... KG.

I'm down 4 already though.

It's fairly undeniable that there has been a huge rise in veganism, no matter what the exact figures are.

When I moved to where I live now, there were precisely zero all vegan or mostly vegan restaurants. Now there are several. The major supermarkets didn't have very many vegan products, now they all have their own vegan range. You can even get vegan cheese at Pizza Hut and Pizza Express now.

The biggest mayonnaise brand here is Hellman's - they just launched a vegan mayo. One of the biggest ice cream brands here is Magnum - they just launched a vegan version. Quorn, who for years have been the biggest brand of vegetarian products, have committed to making all their products vegan and have launched maybe half a dozen vegan products already. Starbucks modified their pumpkin spice latte recipe to make it vegan. And one of the biggest cooking shows here, Great British Bake Off are having a vegan week

Yes it's a trend, and granted, a lot of people won't commit for that long in the grand scheme of things. But the point is that there are so many more options now that didn't exist before, and that's a win no matter how you look at it.

Compared to when I first went vegan 9 years ago, it's a different world.

Yeah that is true. And like I said, we go to a vegan or vegetarian restaurant every now and then and we try the different options -- which I suspect a lot of people do. It's a nice "novelty" every now and then.

No Meat No Morgs. I couldn't imagine paying for vegetables.
