The November 1994 shooting
On the night of November 30, 1994, the day before the verdict in his sexual abuse trial was to be announced, Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of the Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan by two black men in an apparent robbery attempt. He would later accuse Puff Daddy and Notorious B.I.G. — whom he saw after the shooting — of setting him up. According to the doctors at Bellevue Hospital, where he was admitted immediately following the incident, Shakur was shot five times, twice in the head, twice in the groin and once through the arm and thigh. He checked out of the hospital, against doctor's orders, three hours after surgery. The day following the incident, December 1, 1994, Shakur entered the courthouse in a wheelchair and was found guilty of three counts of sexual abuse, but innocent of six others, including sodomy.

Prison sentence

Tupac in a police mugshot (March 8, 1995)Shakur began serving his prison sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility on February 14th, 1995. Shortly afterwards, he released his multi-platinum album Me Against the World. Shakur is the only artist ever to have an album at #1 on the Billboard 200 while serving a prison sentence. The album made its debut on the Billboard 200 and stayed at the top of the charts for 5 weeks. The album had first week sales of 240,000 copies which was the record for highest first week sales for a solo male rap artist at the time.[25] He married his long-time girlfriend, Keisha Morris, while serving his sentence. This marriage was later annulled. While in prison Shakur read many books by Niccolò Machiavelli, Sun Tzu's The Art of War and other works of political philosophy and strategy.[26] He also wrote a screenplay titled Live 2 Tell while incarcerated.

In October 1995, Shakur's case got an appeal but due to all of Shakur's legal fees he could not raise the $1.4 million bail. After serving eleven months of his one and a half year to four and a half year sentence,[27] Shakur was released from prison, due in large part to the help and influence of Marion "Suge" Knight, CEO of Death Row Records. Knight posted $1.4 million bail pending appeal of the conviction, in exchange for which Shakur was obligated to release three albums for the Death Row label.

Legal issues

In December 1993, Shakur was charged with sexually abusing a woman in his hotel room. According to the complaint, Shakur sodomized the woman and then encouraged his friends to sexually abuse her. Shakur vehemently denied the charges. He had prior relations days earlier with the woman who was pressing the charges against him. She performed oral sex on him on a club dance floor and the two later had sex in his hotel room. The allegations were made after she revisited his hotel room for the second time where she engaged in sexual activity with his friends and claimed Tupac's entourage had gang-raped her, saying to him while leaving, "How could you do this to me?" Tupac states he had fallen asleep shortly after she arrived and later awoke to her accusations and legal threats. He later said he felt guilty for leaving her alone, and did not want anyone else to go to jail, but at the same time did not want to go to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Shakur was convicted of "sexual abuse (forcibly touching the buttocks)". In sentencing Shakur to one-and-a-half years in prison, the judge described the crime as "an act of brutal violence against a helpless woman."[21]

thanks for clearing it up for me for me.Why would he waste $1.4 mill when he did most of his sentence, i know he was a rapper but that fucked up his life because he joined Death Row which ended his life trying to proof his loyalty for label.

As someone else mentioned he was out on bail following his appeal to the conviction of Sexual Assault which is the equivalent of touching someone in a manner in which they deemed improper. As a law student I love these types of discussions. as far what wold have happened had he survived? Who knows any type of legal trouble he got into while out on bail, would definitely play a role in his sentencing should his conviction be upheld.

Also from what I remember he was sentenced to 1 to 4 years, he could have gotten time served or maybe just a few days more added on to that to complete his obligation. Who knows we'll never know, we can only speculate, I know since his bail he had gotten into a few more legal problems which could have involved more incarceration separately for those events. I think he was at a point in his life where he didn't really care because he felt like his time on this earth was running short anyway.

I would also say that his even being granted an appeal for his sexual assault charge shows that something was not done right in that case and it could have resulted in the charges being dismissed. To be granted an appeal is a pretty big thing, thousands apply for it every year but most are denied so it shows to me anyway that the NY supreme court felt he wasn't given a fair trial.

Of course he had a trial for those charges. He was convicted and sentenced for sexual assault. He was in jail for most of 1995.

Suge bailed Pac out in October 1995, so Pac was out on bail pending the appeal of his case. However, since he was already serving part of his sentence, that meant that when Pac was released, Pac was on parole. Beating Anderson was an obvious violation of the terms of his parole and would have sent him back to jail, regardless of his appeal, regardless of bail and regardless of any additional charges that the assault of Anderson would have created.

Sorry for the double post, thats not entirely true Morris, Parole is granted to those who are convicted of a crime and have served up there sentence to a point where they are eligible to be paroled. When a appeal is filed and the supreme court of that state grants you that appeal, that means in their eyes something about that trial was not fair, an appealer who wins his appeal is not a parolee he doesn't go before a parole board to seek his release instead a judge issues a terms an conditions of bond , example bond is set at $500,000 and you must remain in state and be available for random drug screening, would be a condition, failure to abide by those terms an conditions would result in the revocation of bond, hence you would remain in prison until your new trial. Parole an bond due to appeal being granted are two different things.

First of all Pac hadn't done 11 months. He had done about 8.

Second of all, the sentence could have been a multi year sentence. Pac wasn't about halfway done.

i know he was a rapper but that fucked up his life because he joined Death Row which ended his life trying to proof his loyalty for label.
Pac can be blamed for making his own decisions, including beating up on Anderson. Besides, he'd already been shot 5 times before joining Death Row. It's not as though he was safe before joining Death Row.

Parole and bond due to appeal being granted are two different things.
Yeah I was wrong. thanks for clearing that up for all of us.

that gun charge happened like a month or 2 before he died. they aren't talking about the gun charge from the rape case but a different one. peace

Yeah i heard he was caught with his cousion riding in a car and a gun was found under the seat. Then he mentioned somthing about biggie leaving some guns at his house and pac getting charged for biggie's guns. Then I think he was suppose to do some comuntiy service that he never did and was awaiting a violation hearing. On top of all that he was gang banging wit suge knight and some bloods at a las vegas casino on the night he got shot.

Say what u want about pac but he was definantly living the thug life
