The North Carolina home of Afeni Shakur-Davis, mother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur, burned to the ground Friday night. While there were no injuries, authorities report the house is a total loss, having suffered extensive fire and smoke damage.
The house was located in Lumberton, N.C., a small town close to the South Carolina border. Shakur-Davis has also always maintained an Atlanta residence, though it is unclear if she still has that home.
Authorities said they were not sure what started the blaze and are still investigating its cause.
Shakur-Davis came into national prominence after her son Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas on Sept. 13, 1996, a death that still goes unsolved and is marked by controversy. At the time, Shakur-Davis was outspoken in her quest for her son's killer. Since his death, she started the Shakur Family Foundation, an organization with a stated mission to "provide training and support for students who aspire to enhance their creative talents" through day camps, scholarships, contests and charity events. The foundation is headquartered in Stone Mountain, Ga., at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts.
