Like I said, "coon" is more of a Southern thing, and even then, a lot don't use it. It's like "sambo" as well. It's old Southern words that still exist but you don't hear much about it.

"Coon" now refers to raccoons for most people. When I say it to someone for the first time, they usually say "like a raccoon?"

Not condoning it, but it's something I do. Let's leave it at that.

I don't feel the need to say "nigga" or other derivatives because, to me, that shows ignorance. "Coon" not too much. Everyone's opinion varies when it comes to it, it seems.

Coon was used in England a lot during the 80s.

But I have to be honest, most people I encounter don't use either word. If I notice any racism it is likely to be "You Black Cunt"... Much like John Terry used. Whether that is racist or not is another debate.

Again, no hatred towards anyone. I use slurs for everyone equally, and also amongst people that aren't/won't be offended by it.

Apparently not everyone's grammar isn't like yours either :D
Ahhhh....got me!

We had a discussion about racism today in the smoker's gazebo. It was mostly Indian/Pakistani Muslims/Hindus. We talked about how our parents' views towards certain groups of people has influenced how we treat those same groups of people in today's society. How we're going off of hearsay from others and not giving others the opportunity to leave an impression on us of them as an individual and instead as a group.

Amongst non-Whites from the US and Canada (because these are the people I'm having these experiences with) it seems that very few maintain those ancient prejudices against others because of what people, whom we respect otherwise, from another generation, another country...almost another era... have told us about them. I'm glad I got the views of some people in my class and respect them even more as a result of it.

It's no worse than using the word "gipped" (or Gyped?) when referring to being screwed over in something.
I've never even heard of that term? :S

I really dislike that word personally, but I'm not one of those people who think ppl who aren't black shouldn't say it. Personally (just my opinion) I feel like "lead by example" if you don't want other people using the word, why are you using the word? (just talking in second person here, not about anyone specifically). Either the word is offensive or it isn't, can't go both ways. I won't say it b/c I don't like it. But I do ask both blk ppl as well as other ppl to use another word if they're in a conversation with me. Usually non-blk ppl apologize and switch the word to something else, but blk ppl seem to become angrier and angrier at me for being offended by the word.

That being said, i'm mostly fine with casual racism. I was jim crowed out of my bathroom in my apartment the other day by my roommate. He literally put up a sign on the bathroom that said something along the lines of "by public decree, this bathroom declared for Whites Only" or something lol. But casual racism is only casual if the people involved know better and think the taboo to be silly.

If Coonie is spreading this word to a place where it's not even heard of, then you're just spreading ignorance around. And in my humble opinion, that's awful. Unless you're also offering explanations as to why the word is considered offensive and you have some secret plan of how to use it to combat racism?

Just the word "coon" alone sounds funny to me. And I would think so to others as well. You have to realize it was first used as a shortened form of "raccoon." Some people thought black people were like raccoons, stealing shit and running around at night. That's how it came to be.

I use it in a lot of different tenses with friends and so do they. But to say "coon" shouldn't be said, even in a non-racist tense, is like saying the word "gay" should be banned, despite it being used to mean something completely different some time ago. If you can condone both uses of the word "gay" then you can condone both use of the word coon.

I'm not implying or outright saying that "I'm right" in using these words, but we all do something very similar to what I'm catching some flak from some of you for.

And gypped was a word that was commonly used in elementary and middle school. It usually referred to trades of Pokemon cards or anything like that. Today it may be more prevalent as "Jewed."

"You Jewed me on that deal."

If you haven't heard of that use before and still think you do nothing of this sort, go off yourself.

Do people in America honestly use the word nigga as a normal part of their vocabulary? That is so embarassing

I didn't say that saying the word gay is okay. It's pretty bad and I worry about saying it in public and actively offending someone by accident. I say it when gaming a lot and try to control it when IRL. (even though the definition varies from gaming to real life and I understand that) But, that's no different than I'm not IRL saying things like "troll face" or "food y u no in tummeh?!" It's funny within it's own space, but outside of it.. not so much.

But anyway.. I'm not trying to imply that you saying coon is bad. I'm saying that your getting other people to say coon is fairly "bad" but that's just my opinion. I certainly don't hold a monopoly on morality. -shrug-

I may have heard of the term "jewed" used that way,but probably from you. People I hang around with just don't talk like that. -goes to corner to off self-

Depending on where you are, yes. And I agree completely.

I was speaking to no one in particular. But I use "coon" the same way I use memes from internet. With close friends. When other people hear me say it, they use it too. I don't tell them "hey, start saying 'coon' or I'm not your friend."

A lot of Black youths yes, and those that "get a pass" in their area.

I'd just like to put it out there that if I do use the word (and I don't condone the usage), it's purely said in jest.

Ahh, from how you mentioned it before, I thought you were actively going around saying it to anyone you come in contact with. LOL

And, it's not just black kids who use the word n**ger/a.. at the group homes I volunteer at.. it's a VERY popular word with Black/Latinos and White kids.. not the Asians though. Then again, there are rarely Asian kids in group home.

No, I don't spread the hate as much as you might think. I keep it localized to a group of people that understand we aren't trying to start a holocaust for blacks but just having fun with a word that is no longer in use. We don't have fun with the n-word, or beaner, or anything that is still used today. Kinda like "one man's trash is another's treasure."
