Just curious, everyone seems to have the general idea of Santa Clause, presents, December 25th, etc, etc for Christmas.

But what are the cultural variations of Christmas for anyone who has a different culture and knows it?

I'll start in case anyone is interested, but I'd really love to know more about what other people do traditionally.

In the Dominican Republic Christmas is celebrated starting around October and ending in January.

There are traditionally fireworks on several nights. The main celebration is on December 24th with family gatherings and TONS of food.

There's also Double Sueldo. This is the practice of most employers paying Dominicans twice in Decemeber, you receive an extra month's pay to have money on hand for shopping.

A tradition for gift exchange is called Un Angelito, which is pretty much the same as Secret Santa.

Gifts are not presented until el Dia de los Reyes / 3 Kings' Day also known as Epiphany. This is held on the 6th of January. This is the day when the Wise Men's arrived at the birth place of Jesus

Those are the basics, anyway tell me more about YOUR traditions, be as detailed as you feel is necessary. :)

Ummm typical british..

Xmas eve isn't really anything special, tho we do tend to go out and get smashed..one of our biggest nights out (at least, near me). I normally work during the day.

Xmas day. Wake up feeling rough. open some prezzies. Have xmas dinner bout 2. Then in the evening go to my mums for more food and prezzies.

Boxing day. Work for me. Triple pay, so it's an easy couple of hundred. Not busy tho, so just chill out reading the newspapers.

26th december

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations and Greece. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in Australia and Canada is a "shopping holiday" associated with after-Christmas sales.
It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day[1][2]; however, its associated public holiday can be moved to the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday. The movement of Boxing Day varies between countries.

Christmas remains a religious holiday in my family and among others of Serbian orthodox faith. We wake up early on January 7th (as our church follows the julian calendar), and have breakfast with certain customs. We also go to church the night before and the day of. Presents are a pretty foreign concept where we're from so we don't engage in that. Where I'm from, presents were given to kids in form of "bundled packages" on New Years day by either the school the kids went to or the parents' place of work. But, also, the parents could buy it themselves.

Xmas Eve - Normally work (I got it off work this year though :D), then last minute shopping! Nothing special afterwards though, just do what I normally do, e.g. get high. I see Christmas day in and say happy xmas to those I'm currently fraggin at that point.

Xmas day - Wake up, have my "Xmas Wank" as I like to call it. Sneak out and get high, open presents, go to the pub for Christmas dinner (Trust me, for the meal you get at the pub on Christmas day cost less than it would to make that amount at home, and theres not dishes to wash after). Come home, play some games, either Board games or on the 360/Wii. Watch Christmas TV. Get high, Go to bed.

Boxing day - Pretty much the same as Xmas day minus the pub and the presents, however its a "Boxing Day Wank" today. Also we have a decent size meal again, normally a giant Crab each at lunch. Crab is my favourite meat in the world, so I look forward to it every year.

Most Muslims are against celebrating Christmas but I don't give a fuck because as far as tradition's go, I live in the West and people do celebrate Christmas here.

My 'vision' of Christmas is having my house decorating with Christmas lights, having a Christmas tree, lots of presents and having a bunch of people over.

No turkey dinners. Instead, pizza, chicken wings and watching Christmas classics like Chevy Chase' Christmas Vacation and Home Alone.

I'm just waiting on this fucking blizzard to hit Chicago so we can have a white Christmas for once.

Still, I'm not Christian, but we still have a tree with lights on it. No lights anywhere else. My sister and I have never bought our parents gifts because our parents buy us the gifts. Seems kinda pointless. My gift to my parents is that I don't do drugs and am not a delinquent. My sister also returns the favor by not being a prostitute. She is 11.

I must say I like your vision a lot. I enjoy the idea of just doing what you want.

We have Boxing Day in Canada, huge ass sales at every store. Most shit 50% off.

Sounds like Black Friday here in the States, or do you guys have Black Friday too? The day after Thanksgiving day sale?

LOL. Why would any other country have a day of sales after a holiday that they don't have? That reminds me of when I was in the US for Independence Day last year and someone in my wife's family asked if we celebrated that in the UK. I'm like.........."yeah.....we celebrate losing a war! FUCK YEAH!" lol

Having said that, a number of the big stores in the centre of London had reductions on the American Black Friday. I imagine it was just the American-owned chain stores.

No we don't celebrate Black Friday. Our Thanksgivings aren't the same as the ones in the USA, either way, I don't even celebrate Thanksgiving. Most don't here, unless you're an uber Canadian eh! kinda of mother fucker.
