Just read about this in the ukA mother who killed her son with a salt overdose because she wanted attention has been jailed for five years.
Petrina Stocker spiked nine-year-old David's hospital drip with 18 teaspoonfuls of salt.
Judge Gerald Gordon today told Stocker she would have to live the rest of her life with what she had done.
He said: "Public revulsion at behaviour such as this means that a custodial sentence is inevitable.
"After nine years with no suggestion of harm to David there has to be some force, incomprehensible to me and most people, driving a mother to behave towards their own child as you did to David."
Stocker bowed her head as she was led out of the dock to prison.
David had been in hospital for months with his mother thwarting attempts by doctors to find out what was wrong with him.
Stocker became worried staff, who suspected her of tampering with his symptoms, would part her from her son.
She poured the salt into two milk feed bottles hoping that a downturn in his condition would stop him being moved.
But David, who was very weak, collapsed and died after being given one with 13 spoonfuls.
Stocker, 42, of Romford, Essex, was found guilty at the Old Bailey yesterday of David's manslaughter at Great Ormond Street Hospital, central London, in August 2001.
She was said to be suffering from factitious illness by proxy, a disorder previously referred to as Munchausen's syndrome by proxy.
Nigel Litham, defending Stocker, said: "There was no intention of malice to the child. It is likely she never stopped loving David.
"She has already paid a high price through her own deeds. She has lost everything she loves."
Health and social services chiefs and police have all admitted mistakes in their handling of the case
