There is some interview out there where he talks about writing Dear Mama and he says he was just writing while he was in the bathroom and when he finished it up he called her up and read it to her, and they were both crying over the phone. I don't think he would've been able to accomplish this from prison.

I agree it was probably written while he was free. We all know he had a different version of Me Against The World set and then changed it after his shooting, but it still could have been on the original album.
