Pope tells Africa 'condoms wrong'

Ermmm... No where in the article does he actually say the words "condoms are wrong."

The only retarded thing here is the bad journalism and the fact you're all replying based on the headline without reading the article.

All that he said is this:

HIV/Aids was, he argued, "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem".

The solution lay, he said, in a "spiritual and human awakening" and "friendship for those who suffer".
All he said was money and condoms are not enough to overcome the HIV problem. And he is 100% correct. And what is wrong with a human awakening and enlightenment? Regardless of Religion? And what is wrong with "friendship for those who suffer?" Should we shun the sick?

Everything he said is 100% correct and he didnt say anything about condoms being wrong at all.

He's only pretending to give a fuck about people in Africa.

Not true, the Catholic Church has always invested a lot in Africa it has one of the fastest rising conversion to Christianity rates on the planet, where as other parts of the world it is falling.

Why would you say they dont care about Africa? Why wouldnt they? Because they are black? Are you racist?

For the record, I am not a Church going Catholic and do not like any organized religion, but I think a lot of the comments in this thread are misplaced and ignorant.

I agree, I was quick to jump the gun and it was foolish of me. I've heard of things he's said in the past, and they were outrageous, so I read over the article quickly, and I assumed 'What else is new?' ... I guess I was just comparing too much to the last Pope, who achieved many great feats. I've read numerous times that our Pope is actually quite brilliant, but surrounds himself with 'Yes men' ... They do anything he says, but if he makes an error, they won't confront him about it... so that may explain some of his blunders lol...
As for the Africa comment, whoever said it, maybe you should research more on that. Should you ask people in Africa as to who has helped them the most in their times of need... believe me they won't say USA or any other country, they'll say the Catholic Church.

He said condoms "increases the problem".

C'mon.
No he said HIV "cannot be overcome by money alone" and "cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms," which it can not, and he said it "can even increase the problem."

He is right. Just handing out condoms will not help overcome the current HIV situation in Africa, they need education to prevent further infection and medicine for current suffers.

The problem is people are fucking like crazy, condoms can break, they are not educated about how HIV is really spread, some think only women can pass it on, etc etc. Giving them condoms is basically saying "here go fuck and you'll be protected," and that is not always the case. They need proper education on the matter.

So the pope is actually right in this case (and he has said some fucked up things in the past I agree, but not here), simply throwing condoms at the situation can make it worse.

You are implying the pope said that out of some deep, thoughtful approach to the problem rather than the whole Church's "thing" about unborn life?

I mean, REALLY?

No, unlike you, and the so called journalists who quote the pope as saying "condoms wrong" in the headline yet he clearly said no such thing if you read the article, I am not jumping to any conclusions or making any assumptions. I am simply going by what he said and not misquoting or misconstruing what was said.

Once again here is what was said:

HIV/Aids was, he argued, "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem".

The solution lay, he said, in a "spiritual and human awakening" and "friendship for those who suffer".
And nothing he said is wrong at all.

"a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem".

If the bit between the quotes is what the Pope said, then...

what the hell is the bolded part about? Or was that a case of "grammatical malfunction" on the part of the Vatican speechwriter?

It all depends on how you want to interpret that bolded line. Most people thought it means that no condoms = better than condoms. I think Caesar means that it can also mean the Pope said that giving away condoms and telling that they'll fix the problem will in fact make the problem worse which of course would happen.

Except that the Catholic church unfortunately teaches that condoms are wrong and shouldn't be used because the only positive way to react is to not have sex before marriage. Sure it's the best solution but it's rarely respected. That's why I think he should add something like "though if you really want to sin and have sex with various people using condoms is better than not using them".
But it'd be weird.

Probably so. But will you allow me my sincere scepticism about the Pope's clear insight given I know how the Church thinks about the latex tent?

I'm just saying...
