The side of India I have never seen

Why do you have to quote someone to make your point, dont you have an original idea of your own?
Eh? Quoting somebody else is not a bad move. Its not a sign of a lack of originality either.

Being deeply religious or thinking the ganges contains holy water is the explanation for the way these people think and act. Nothing more. It doesnt make it any less weird or less unhealthy (not that most of them have any other chance though).

Go right ahead, find me something worse.
Have you seen pictures of the children in Iraq that were born severely mutated and deformed due to radiation from all the bombs dropped in the nearby areas? Because I found that much worse than this.

And LOL at you calling me "pathetic" for "defending" this. I wasn't defending it in any way. My original point was that if you go looking for fucked up shit you'll find it anywhere. I've been to India plenty of times and never seen anything like this. I would bet that 90% of people in India and 99% of tourists who visit have never seen this kind of thing. But like I said - if you specifically go looking for it, you'll find shit like this everywhere.

You ever seen a crackhouse in the worst parts of any big American city? You ever been to a crackhouse in the Bronx, or Compton? You ever been to a meth lab in Cali? a trailer park? A high-rise government housing building in London? the ghettos in Jamaica? parts of Africa where they literally have no clean water or food at all? the shanty towns in Brazil?

It's childish to be surprised by something like this and just shows you to be an uncultured, unworldly person. Instead of being all immature and "ewww that's nasty" about it, understand that yes, there are problems and suffering in this world, and perhaps do something to help.

Yes, acknowledging that bathing in and drinking water which has rotten corpses floating in it is very bad for your health and judging it as idiotic makes me "uncultured" and blind to all the suffering in the world, yes of course. That makes perfect sense.

In Caseyland. Entrance fee: 20 Prince asslickings.

That makes me about 20 asslickings short on dough. So I'll just stay here in the rational world, if you don't mind.

^^ LMAO!!! @ Prince asslickings.

I gotta say this thing was very shocking for me, and I've been to India 4 times. And I can understand why Duke is surprised by this. Like I said earlier, these people have to do this to survive. If not bathe in it, but to drink from it.

I'm not saying this is the worst shit in the world, but it is definitely up there.

You should really visit India more or read up a bit more on it. These people do have a choice, obviously. Particularly where these pictures were taken, there are public wells and pumps for them to use (I should know as I helped install one) also, people dont use this as their source of drinking water.

The way this piece was written seems like the propaganda-ish material people distribute. It gives the impression of a sea of dead bodies and people happily playing among them, which is not the case at all.

The people bathing are more than likely doing the prayers that they do every morning right before going home (to a house or shanty) and having a bath before work or whatever they do. Or they are doing prayers after a funeral they have just been to.

Do they feel as if this makes them closer to the dead? (Not being sarcastic.. just curious). By praying and bathing in the river where the corpses are?

No its not about being closer. Its a respect for the dead. Hindus believe the Ganges is cleansing and when you die and scatter your ashes it takes you to 'heaven'. Or if you bathe in it, it purifies your soul (technically you dont have to bathe in it totally, the water just has to touch the top of your head, like a drop)

The sad part is, is that pollution is what makes it so dirty, not the bodies or ashes.

Having to bathe in the local natural waterbody and using the same water for cooking and sewer is indeed a real problem found all over the world still. The thing for me is that they're throwing dead people in there, leave them to rot and then sitting 10 feet away from a floating bubble of flesh brushing their teeth with the same water. They dont HAVE to do that. They dont have to chuck the dead in there and leave them to rot, yet they do so out of religious conviction. And that makes me say they're idiots. Even bigger idiots when theres a clean(er) water well nearby.

Now, vg, i've never said in here that I expect this is commonplace in India. I'm sure they are the exception, I never thought otherwise. Doesnt change my opinion of these people though. If you sit in a tub with a corpse, you're an idiot.

also lol @ Casey getting all defensive over someone slamming religious idiots. Is it hypocrite-week in Caseyland?

Right, because these wells always have water for a village of a million people.

Even in more developed parts of India, water is only available at certain times of the day. Where I was, it was 5 AM that they distributed water. So someone had to get up and turn the pipes on and collect the water in buckets. And this was in the good parts.

What are we arguing about, anyway? That the Ganges water is not drinkable? I know that. They probably know that. And while it may not be common for those people to drink the water from there, I'm sure some do because those wells and pumps you speak of are not always functioning.

Bathing with dead corpses or just simply having them out like that...well, in the name of religion and its rituals, we can overlook it and say that it's just tradition and it may be weird, but who are we to judge?

Are you angry that the Chinese are trying to pass this off as THE way these people live? Again, I'm sure someone in that village has it worse than you think it is from your experiences there. To expand further, someone in another village definitely has it much worse. We know what the river is known and used for. But to some, it's more pivotal than merely a cemetery/graveyard. And that's the unfortunate part.

Are you angry that they may be exaggerating and stereotyping all Indians to live like this? Other places have shitholes, true, but show me where people wake up to a dead body floating in front of their house. Cholera infested water, in front of their house. Their sewage water....in front of their house.

What would you rather be, a crackhead in Compton or a citizen of this village?

The ones by the Ganges were all from Varanasi, not the whole river. If he took pictures in Haridwar the pics would have been polar opposites.

Also, he was totally disrespectful to take pictures of bodies in the first place, you arent supposed to do that. But I guess he was a stereotypical chinese tourist being shutter happy
Jesus Christ I wanted to punch the god damn Chinese fucks when I was in India... They were taking pictures of every fucking thing in a manner to prove themselves that they are better. Pieces of fucking shit, I wanted to beat them all up when they were laughing at Untouchables asking them for food.

The people who carry dead bodies "professionally" are untouchables by the way.

Also, if you want me to post the other side of India here, I'd be more than happy to. Some of you guys can see my pics on Facebook, but all I have to say about India is that it's the most amazing place I've been to in my life. Mumbai is the best place I've been clubbing and night life wise and I've been to about every clubbing city on this planet (except Rio and Miami).

People may think that India is some shit hole. Imo, in about 20 years, we will be asking them for financial help.

I was there for business and I never dealt with better businessmen in my life.

Rant over.

Last rant: Fuck China, they can't do business for shit.

lol we are not arguing. Why are people so confrontational here?

Anyway, you are right that water is not reliable but that doesnt mean that if someone is so thirsty they will just stroll down to the Ganges, sit next to a corpse and drink away! When you were in India and the water didnt work, is that what you did, no right? Give them a bit more credit, most of the poor store water in central areas for these occasions or are clever enough to find another source.

I have seen the WORST India has to offer in terms of squalor and filth and trust me, if there was a puddle of water with sewage mixed in and someone was dying of thirst, they would NOT drink it!

I dont know how they can brush their teeth though, my immune system is a pussy compared to theirs.

That's true though, there is such a difference between cities and villages. And Varanasi is just like one huge village. And even in cities, there's a huge huge gap between the rich and the poor. It is not physically or geographically divided. You see it everywhere.

There is usually 500 feces bacteria per liter of water... In the Varanasi part of the Ganges, it's about 5.000.000 per L. Thing is, 95% of the pollution is because of the awful sewer system and not because of corpses...

By the way, the only humans who are thrown in the river are the "impure" ones. Say a person who killed someone or someone who was bitten by a snake.

I went on a rant because I hate it when people see India as a third world country who needs our "help to evaluate". They do not need us. I went on a trade mission there, and my company was the only company with an exporting mandate who was able to sell something. Everything we do, they do it too. And it's not cheap quality like China. It's as good.

I worked for a company. I worked in a Trade Mission organization in my University and we're offering international counseling services. I signed a contract with a company owning 40% of the market share in North America, so I had a huge advantage to other exporting companies.

Basically, if you want to export there, you have to do something no one else does.

The Trade Mission organization was all students btw. Student owned and ran. I'm working there now. I'm the trade mission leader for United Kingdom. We're going back to India again this year. It's usually two destinations per year.

Anyway.... India's awesome.

I spent 3 days in Varanasi during that huge religious holiday and I didn't see anything like that.

Of course, I wouldn't have been surprised to see shit like that. Of course, there was a lot of cows in the water, but hey... Why not right.

Thats good stuff, I love those sort of jobs where you travel like that and actually do something that makes a difference and meet different people. Most people in my uni want to go into consulting or some crap. Im the only one of my friends whos applied for jobs at he UN and DFID lol.

Anyway, I guess thats what you get when you hand around with business school jocks

Oh, on a side note, my wedding was in Varanasi :p Were you one of the white tourists taking pictures of me?

So the anger is against the Chinese people, not members on here? I didn't feel I was part of it, but it seems like tension was running high between Duke, Casey, and VG. As cultured as Duke may be, I thought maybe he didn't know, from experience, what it was like there. I don't know either, but I know from experience what it isn't. But I do know from word-of-mouth, how bad it can get and these pictures just brought them to light for me since I hadn't been there before.
