Okay, im a little confused.

Basically, what i want to do is root the device but be able to restore CRC37 back on it.

Cyan's ROM does not drain battery life. The person who posted that thread probably had some app draining battery life. Besides, Cyan's new ROM has an "Battery Life Gauge" where you can explicitly see what (if anything) is causing your battery to drain. That's another feature from Donut.

I used to have HTC phones before the new shift. Back when they started with the TouchFLO shit (or whatever). My opinion has always been that HTC phones have shit hardware. I haven't tried the G1 or any of the new models, but I heard they still show the same tendencies of sucky hardware some times giving dead time. "Sucky" is a relative term I guess.

I bought an iPhone the other day and man oh man am I happy with it. Notable here is that I'm your typical Fuck-A-Mac guy who swears to Windows and PCs, but the iPhone nails it. It's like the PDA phone for people who want one but don't really need one. Everything you can do with it (minus the camera) is awesome, and there's no hangups and dead time waiting for shit to load. This whole "seamless experience" thing they have going with the iPhone is win. So happy.

Edit: Also, I refuse to jailbreak it. Warranty and updates ftw!

once i get CRC37 i can do the root.

so if i use mybackup, would i need to make use of nandroid (does it do the same/similar things?)

the G1 shits on the iPhone, Preach. Starting from about 2 years ago, HTC's hardware has been among the most solid there is. The new HTC Hero in particular has a glass screen and Teflon coating which is very luxurious.

Sandeep - MyBackup will backup all your apps, data, SMS etc.

Nandroid makes a backup of your ENTIRE phone and everything on it, including the OS, recovery image, etc. It's for use when people have problems flashing ROMS and need to revert back to what they had before, or if someone wants to check out a new ROM to see what's it's like and then flash back quickly to a more stable one.

I would recommend you partition your SD card before you flash Cyan's ROM, because it'll do apps2SD automatically.

Actually it's for people who don't want their lives dictated to by Apple and AT&T. Jailbreaking actually stops the iPhone from being a COMPLETE piece of shit by making it marginally more usable.

For example - non-iphone 3GS users get to have a camcorder if they are jailbroken - shame they have to jailbreak to use such a basic function, oh sorry I forgot, Apple likes to hold back basic functions until their marketing team finds a way to make them "new" and "revolutionary".

Another example - Qik, the live video streaming service. App store version does not even support the main function of the service - live video streaming, it only supports pre-record and upload of video. Jailbroken Cydia version works properly.

I could go on, but I grow weary of talking about such a fail device.

This I agree with. An Apple fanboy I am not, I just like the concept of what they are doing. PCs are mix and match, Apple is a brand. It's a different style in todays computing world and even though it has its pro's and con's, I respect what they are doing. That said, I do disagree with a lot of their business policies. My reason for not wanting to jailbreak it is that it simply makes the phone more prone to bugs, and it voids my warranty. You open up the phone and SIM-lock by having background applications running on the phone, which sounds like it'll affect it's stability and performance, and then the warranty and update shit. That's simply why I don't wanna

You don't void the warranty because you can just restore the phone. Also, you can get updates with a jailbroken phone. Updates don't even come out that fast. You just have to jailbreak it again after the update. Learn your shit. It makes the iphone so much more worth it. Fuck you Slaty.

Engadget's title is misleading - read the article and the comments. Qik for iPhone has been updated, but it STILL DOESN'T STREAM - the whole point of the app.

It only allows pre-recorded video uploads still. The new update allows uploading those videos over 3G, but still no live streams.

But I think you already read the article and you already knew that - you were just trying to find an argument and banking on the fact that perhaps I hadn't already read the article.

And your last point isn't really a point. You're not saying anything there. So the "gtfo" was pointless.

I'm well aware of the needs of your average phone user. I just don't agree with your point about most jailbreakers being freeloaders. I know a bunch of people with iPhones. Two of them in particular stand out, they are not technical people. They didn't care about free apps or ROMS. But they both had jailbroken their iPhones. Why? To install the Camcorder - BASIC functionality that Apple could EASILY release a software update for. But they would rather squeeze money out of people by forcing them to upgrade to a new phone that's basically identical but has a camcorder, despite the previous model being perfectly capable of doing so. That's pure deceit, and iPhone users know it! So, they jailbreak.

Nah but if you're going to use a phone for it's basic functions why don't you buy a cheaper 100$ phone that does it's job way better?
The problem is that most people I know + my personal experience tell me that Iphone can't do those basic things right. It's not reliable at all and if it is for you then you're either lucky or a total fanboy blind to all the faults of your phone.
