When you're shopping for a product...

What are some service demands/expectations that you have of the store, if say you're shopping for clothing. I don't mean things like price and quality of product but things like customer service and wide assortment.

I expect the women service to test out products for me. I.e, I might be interested in some skimpy clothing, soap and a great sponge, then she better work hard, I am a buying customer. I want to know if they know the product they are selling.

I don't expect someone to be on my back all the time. For example, if I'm looking for clothes, I hate it when the sales person seems to follow you around. The first thing you touch they ask: "ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A SPECIFIC SIZE?" ...

That throws me off right away. I don't like being watched down like some vulture.

I like it when they greet you, tell you about any specials, and if you have any questions or need help, they let you know where they will be. That's the best customer service for me.

Yeah I agree, I also don't like it when if you want to try something on in a fitting room, they have a person there that asks you how many pieces of clothing you have and then they take you to the "right" fitting room. Then, after you're done, you have to walk past them and they ask "so, how was it, did you like those jeans?" or something. Just...don't talk to me.

Same here. Or worse.... You're changing in the dressing room, and they knock on the door while you have 1 leg in the jeans, 1 leg out.. and they say: "HOWS EVERYTHING IN THERE? NEED A DIFFERENT SIZE? CAN I RUB HONEY ON YOUR THIGHS?"

Ok, the last part isn't true, cause I'd like that, but you get the picture... lol

I don't mind if people ask me what I am looking for, not even the size....just don't look @ me like I am going to steal it after you help me find it.

but usually I am not up for help and just am into it myself. I usually tell them I am just looking and they usually go away.

Whenever I buy something and want some help nobody knows anything about things they sell except the info that's written on it. For example when you go to a shop to buy an lcd tv they won't tell you much more than that it's contrast, reaction time and brightness level is great blabla (which is all written on that particular tv). They won't tell you that it's worthless to consider those parameters. They won't tell you about technologies used or why one tv is better than another in an intelligent way (except comparing 2 irrelevant parameters you already see). Same with shopping for any other electonic device or any service. That's why I always do a little research before buying stuff and go shopping after I already know what I want to see/try and then when I go to buy it annoying shopkeepers want to convince me into getting something more shitty. I hate shopkeepers that can't even do their shitty job right. They don't have much to learn about things or services that they're selling. I find the customer service useless.

haha yeah I remember I was at Express once and this guy knocked and was like "So how are those sizes working out for you" "Do you want me to bring you a different size?"

The funny thing is, that was kinda helpful because I really needed a bigger waist size and he brought the jeans lol and it worked.

But, still, I don't like it.

a healthy smile sprinkled with a bit of gratitude is always nice.
...so american.

...so pointless.

I love how Germans wouldn't shop at Wal-Mart back in the day because, when the employees were instructed to smile at their customers, in Germany, it's considered flirting and coming on and customers complained.

LOL ^

I heard the same about Russia. When McDonalds first arrived there, the cashiers would be smiling. The Russians thought they were fucking insane.

Cmon now, everyone knows Russians are miserable bastards.

actually, that's more Japanese. You should visit Japan and see what kind of service you get there. From the gas pump attendant to mom and pops at the noodle shop.

I don't feel all that well when a worker won't even look at me in the eye.

As far as wanting to be left alone etc. I can agree because I'm not a social person but what do you expect a worker to do? It's better than getting treated like you don't exist. And some people want that kind of sticky service.

So, I say again - a healthy smile and a bit of gratitude in my opinion is at the top of the list and that kind of service should be a plus to everyone.

I agree...I am glad that MOST of my family that works in those places actually know what they are talking about. :D

Yes. I want to throw it out there that I understand that superior customer service (the type that annoys me) works better for companies overall. I'm just speaking me personally.

So, I say again - a healthy smile and a bit of gratitude in my opinion is at the top of the list and that kind of service should a plus to everyone.
But why? I'm a cynic so it's kinda obvious why it's pointless to me.

The way I see it, a smile doesn't "do" anything for me. I understand for many people, it might brighten their day or feel better if they "feel" that the person appreciates their business but, again, the cynic in me calls bullshit on that one.

A person who gets commission off of your sale might have a genuine smile of gratitude because that person is happy they made money off of you.

A salesperson in a big retailer in general won't have a genuine smile because you're just #578 today. I'd rather not have a smile instead of a fake smile because the person was instructed to smile at customers.

To me, the gratitude comes from satisfaction with the product or service.

But if I'm buying organic baby hats (don't ask why that's an example) from a small business where the owner is selling it to me personally, I will most likely take his/her smile as genuine and feel good about supporting the business.
