Have you guys rooted yet?

If not - there's a new method, and it's piss-easy compared to the old way. You can have your phone rooted and running a custom ROM in 6 minutes now. It doesn't show in the video what the app is called, but it's called "Recovery Launcher" and you can find it in the market.

Check it out:

I would heavily recommend it. Cyanogen, who is the main person developing custom ROMs, is releasing a stable Cyanogen4.0 ROM later tonight (there's two trees, a stable tree and an experimental tree, the stable one is great for everyday use), and that's what I'll be running after he releases it. I've been using his last stable release for a couple of weeks now, and it is amazing, especially combined with the Open Overclock app from the market which lets you utilize all of the phone's 528mHz processor (stock unrooted ROM keeps you underclocked at about 400mHz). Fast, smooth, just a much better experience compared to stock.

Also 4.0 ROM includes aspects from the upcoming "Donut" release, which probably won't hit officially for a few months at least.

Give it a go and let me know how you get on.

Unrooting is easy, it's just a case of re-flashing the stock ROM. If you ever need to do that, I'll help you do it.

And no, you shouldn't lose any files, but if you're worried, download the free 30 day trial of "My Backup" from the market and use that to backup your apps, SMS, data etc.

That's dope. Don't get the Touch Pro 2 though. It runs WinMo which is epic fail compared to Android.

Yo, ImmortalTech, 4.0.1 is the new stable ROM. Get the app "CM Updater" from the market and use that to upgrade.

Download the app "Recovery Flasher" from the market. This is the one-click-root app.

Then use this app to root and install the recovery image.

Turn your phone off.

Turn it on while holding the home button

You'll get to the recovery menu

Select "apply zip from sd"

select the zip file of the Cyanogen ROM 4.0.1

It will flash the ROM!

Select reboot.

You're done!

thanks. also i have found out that it does delete data from the G1. so a back should be made. im just wondering how i can reverse the root if suddenly something goes wrong and i need to take it back to t-mobile.

i am only 2 months into my contract and dont want to end up permanently damaging my phone when there's 10 months left on the warranty. its just a precautionary measure im taking rather than not thinking about it twice.

i recall you saying something about it being easy to unroot the phone and revert all the settings back to factory settings so that t-mobile would notice or suspect a thing.

Yep, you would just flash the stock image, the same way that you flashed the custom ROM. This would unroot your device.

There's simply no way to damage your phone by rooting it or installing custom ROMS, except for one way.

That way is what can happen for people trying to install the HERO rom and it's when people attempt to flash the Danger SPL without having flashed the required radio. In that instance, it's imperative to flash to the radio first. But I wouldn't recommend flashing the Hero ROM anyway, Cyanogen's ROMS are much better. Cyan's new ROM 4.0.1 is the fastest ROM I've ever used. It's seriously speedy!

No, it's readily available online if you Google search for it. The current UK stock ROM is build CRC1, I believe.

One last question: In "Flash Recovery" when you press "Backup Recovery Image" is that the image of a ROM that you can revert back to? (in my case, CRC37)

Also, flashrec is the same thing as Flash Recovery right? Its been a little confusing because of all the things im reading online and different people are using different methods.

No, it's not the image of a ROM. It's the default Recovery Image.

Recovery is what you get to when you hold down Home while powering on your device. Cyanogen's Recovery Image is the one that allows you flash different ROM's, make Nandroid backups, etc.
