which reminds me masta, from your other thread...

i went to the MSDNAA site and found my university on there. i think that only my IT department and other IT students can access it, meaning that i cant as im a school of applied sciences student.

is there perhaps another way i could get this? they are requesting a 'Student Identifier' code which i do not have access to.

any possible excuses i could use to trick the lecturer's into receiving the code. they might check their registers to see if im an IT student, but last year i did an elective module for Intro to IT (because it was dead easy). maybe with the slightest chance possible i could retrieve that from them.

**If you do not know your student identifier, please contact your professor or MSDNAA Program Administrator.**
Ask your Uni IT department, they should sort you out.

HA! Like I said it should be available to all students. Even students at a forestry department in our "agricultural university" can use it lol
You should only check if your school was "kind" enough to subscribe:

MSDNAA School Search

I checked Birmingham and I see "Applied sciences" department on that list (Aston University?). Same for University of Birmingham and Chemistry department.
There's even some psychology department and School of Physics and Astronomy on that list.

You should email the administrator of your school's MSDNAA program to ask if you're allowed to use it and if so what's your login and password.
University of Wolverhmapton. Only the computer science department provides a link to the software centre:

It's more about a specific model, not about the company. Some HP laptops were great.
However if you want quality go for Lenovo/IBM.

thats common sense. i always research into the product i want and i highly recommend it to anyone and everyone, especially those on a tight budget.

acer, to my knowledge have created many excellent notebooks and they are very stylish too. companies like dell, hp are advertised everywhere from newspapers to television. most of their processors are celeron dual cores and approx 160GB HDDs hence the low prices. dell are just a big name brand and people will buy their products because they have the image that dell actually have the best products. you get what you pay for, hence the low price.

companies like sony have decent notebooks, very stylish and i love the designs of them but they just dont have the best specs and are overpriced.

RM (got these at uni), lenovo (got these at work), acer (my laptop) are excellent. not too sure about IBM these days because i havent seen much from them though i know theyve created some great stuff in the past. i think my first pc was from IBM.

i believe RM are excellent because they focus on computer technology for study, therefore cutting out all the nonsense and still being sufficient enough to do everything else. also they are cost-effective and innovative. the eco-quiet computers we have at uni i looked up run at much cooler temperatures in classrooms and consume about 2/3rds less energy than a normal desktop pc. this can save a university an electricity bill of approximately £9000 a year, thats almost $15,000.

lenovo, cost-effective, good specs - not big name like sony/hp/dell therefore cannot afford to overprice, hence giving you a good deal if you be sensible with your needs/luxuries.

same with acer and they provide excellently for needs of entertainment, supporting HD and Blu-ray drives, gaming and movies. nice design, cost-effective, not huge name but are improving reputation. the ferrari acer notebook looks really nice. ive got the 5920 aspire. gemstone notebook looks beautiful too. the only problem i have with my laptop is that its a bit chunky and heavy so not so great with portability. performance is a monster compared to other laptops i compared for £400 at the time.

take this for example, my brother HP laptop vs. my acer aspire 5920:

HP = £400 value, knocked down to £370, Acer = £400
HP = 160GB, Acer = 250GB
HP = Intel Pentium Dual Core 2GB RAM, Acer = Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz 667MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache, 2GB RAM
HP = HD, Acer = HD
HP = DVD-/+RW Drive, Acer = DVD-/+RW Drive
HP = 15" widescreen, Acer = 15" widescreen
HP = Loud speakers, Acer = Loud speakers with integrated subwoofer. speakers are integrated across the length of the laptop and are excellent for movies, music, games.

also the games performance on mine is better than my brothers. all for the same region.
the only thing my brother had better off than me was the £30 less and its dimensions making it more portable.

IBM = Lenovo now. Lenovo is a company that produces IBM PCs and Laptops.
Acer used to be a shitty Taiwanese company but they got much, much better with time.

I always take a lot of time researching products I plan to buy but I've noticed that a lot of people don't do it at all. Some people just go and buy a product they need in a price range they want without even taking 5 minutes to read reviews and user opinions.

^i actually spent a good amount of $ on my laptop when i bought it. i didn't go cheap and look where it took me. my sister bought a cheap laptop and hers is still freaking working. this whole laptop crashing is upsetting me. i'm glad i had not stored new data on my laptop after fixing it a month ago, i was scared it would crash again and unfortunately i was right.

a friend of my mother's will check my laptop to know what the issue is. if it's the motherboard, screw that i'm getting another laptop. hp charged $450 (taxes incl) to install a new motherboard and i doubt it goes for much less than that. it will just piss me off that i bought a new 500gig hdd a month ago for absolutely nothing and that i won't know what to do with it. (that's assuming that it is working or if that crashed too).

if thats the case you may as well sell your laptop for spares and repairs i.e. for its parts.

speaking of HP's causing trouble and also people who dont read reviews (i.e. my brother). his laptop gets stuck on "shutting down" (vista). he said he left it on for 24 hours until today to show me the problem he has when switching it off that it gets stuck. i told him to hold the power button and it will shut down. he said he tried it and it didnt work. i said "do it now", he did it and it didnt work. "oh thats gay. why didnt it work" he says. clearly he either never tried it, or didnt try the second time.

ive given him IT books to familiarise himself with compter and ICT terms and general info because he didnt bother with computers and is illiterate in that area. so i told him if you read these they might help you learn simple and basic things which will help you understand more about other technology. he encounters the most basic problems it annoys me, and its far too frequent! he gets angry and takes his anger out on people like me when he doesnt understand a thing im saying. he doesnt let me show him either because he thinks he will learn better if he does it. even when i show him it doesnt sink in. he has no interest IMO. bloody abusive he is. hence why were not on good terms as much nowadays. makes me miserable and i really try and stay happy but cant manage!

i need to see a counsellor.

im hoping i can get the free windows 7 upgrade from my IT department.

also, i tried doing data recovery today using R-Studio on my home computer to restore files i accidentally emptied out of the recycle bin about a month or two ago. i couldnt figure out how to use it properly.

what i did manage to do was scan the whole c drive and find files, but when i previewed or restored some jpegs, text files and other small files to test, the pictures had a "no preview available" message and the text in notepad appeared all scrambled up. so im not sure if im doing the right thing.
