Meat Found in Meatless Magazine

With the help of an anonymous reader tip, the author of the vegan blog, quarrygirl.com, accused VegNews of using food images of meat in its magazine and website and passing them off as meatless. The allegation prompted the San Francisco-based publication to confess that it had, "from time to time," used stock images that turned out not to be totally animal-free.

"The pictures we've been drooling over for years are actually of MEAT!" she charged.

In response, the magazine admitted that "Yes, from time to time, after exhausting all options, we have resorted to using stock photography that may or may not be vegan," in a plaintive letter addressing the controversy.

Quarrygirl is a friend of mine, I saw this article the moment she published it. Fucked up.

As I understand, a consortium of folks are setting up a all vegan food photo website and allowing licensing of their images in order to ensure this kinda shit doesn't happen again.

So... Not only does a Vegan have to avoid animal products, but they have to avoid looking at meat? Or fantasising over meat? Even accidentally?

That's some serious devotion.

Is there a Vegan book similar to the bible. The 10 Meat Commandments?

No..... and a vegan doesn't "have" to do anything, what we choose to do or not to do is simply a choice, we sometimes joke about "the vegan police" but at the end of the day that's just a joke.

the issue here is that it's kind of ridiculous for a big vegan magazine like VegNews to be using stock pictures of meat and dairy when even the most shoestring-budget vegan blog can manage to take it's own pictures of the recipes they write. Obviously the magazine itself knows that because there was at least one instance where they photoshopped bones out of a picture in order to hide the fact.

Quarrygirl herself runs a popular blog, writes a shit ton of articles, reviews and basically has dedicated a large part of her life to her passion for veganism and she does not get paid for it. She puts in a lot of work and then you've got VegNews, a magazine with a huge subscriber base.... arguably putting in a lot less work, and doing something that's shady enough to where some people are almost certainly going to be offended by it, and they are selling magazines and getting paid to do what they do.

I mean, when you have a vegan recipe and a picture next to it in a big magazine, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that that picture is actually of the recipe it's supposed to relate to. People don't stand for false advertising regardless of the product.

We don't have to avoid looking at meat, but most vegans simply don't want to because we find it the concept of it repulsive. So on that basis, a picture of meat being used to illustrate a vegan meal is obviously unacceptable. Especially if it's been photoshopped to try and disguise that. Basically they're lying to people, or at the very least, misleading them. And obviously nobody likes being lied to regardless of what the issue is.

Meanwhile all over the CONTINENT of Africa child soldiers are running rampant, little girls are being raped becuase it's believed sex with them cures aids, the average lifespan in many countries is under 50 years old, countries are being pillaged for their resources and the people who are suffering don't even know the value of said resources.

But yeah, fuck meat. Killing animals is an atrocity

Dude, there's always something worse than something else, I know you're not stupid enough to not see that. Everybody in the western world could help animals without any inconvenience.

We can't solve Africa's problems as individuals. What exactly do you want me to do about child soldiers in Africa? I support the charities that help them and as I'm not the head of a major charity organisation or a powerful politician or world leader that's all I can do.

Seriously, if I didn't know you were being sarcastic I'd have to say you'd be an idiot for that comment.

Does the existence of a large problem negate the need to solve a somewhat smaller one?

Basically what you're saying is that if your dad has a heart attack and a stroke, and then your mom gets AIDS, we should no longer give a fuck about your dad because your moms condition is worse.

Meanwhile all over the CONTINENT of North America Da_Funk isn't doing anything about the things he just listed.

I do like your logic (?) though. Whenver someone mentions an issue, see if there are worse things in the world and then dismiss the aforementioned issue.

The real reason is that meat looks tasty, and Vegan food is bluuurgh. So people made the meal thinking - "hmmm That looks tasty". But it isn't. You know why??? No meat!

I was making a ridiculous over the top stupid statement to point out how ridiculous, over the top, and stupid that news article is.

I didn't think it was all that ridiculous. Some people have their priorities fucked up, that's all. Casey and Chronic's points are well-taken too, but don't back away. You were right.

You care more about what you're going to wear to your hot date tonight with a Fabio-look-a-like than you do about child rape. You know this to be true.

Here you go Casey, some good veggies.

Mouhahahaha, now you have to get whipped 10 times for your careless behavior.

Which I'm wondering, what would the whip be made out of? Since it's basically leather right...
