lol @ General American. Duke, please keep off of Wikipedia. :D

THis has nothing to do with wiki. GA is mentioned in all my English study books. And my point stands. Most American accents differ less from GA than Brits do from RP. GA and RP being types of speech one generally finds when theyre reading the news.

with every bachi post i feel like i'm losing brain cells...

as far as americans recognizing others' accents, i wouldnt say you could distinguish it by state really... like tennessee and kentucky have very similar accents. along with georgia, north carolina, etc. but some places inside those states even have diff. accents than other cities. like my louisville friends have notably different accents than my friends from mccreary county [i know, where the fuck is that, right?]

texas and kentucky accents dont even seem that different to me, both just seem redneckish. not talking about like, houston and dallas, but austin and more rural areas.

i definitely have a southern accent, but not like most would imagine when they find out i live in kentucky. i havent lived here my whole life, i wasnt born here, i moved here during my 'developmental' years of childhood tho. my vocabulary and accent is far from my peers. i NEVER say the words: reckon, bygod, dad gum it, dad damn it [yes some people here actually say that] and i know how to form a correct sentence. "he ain't going to" is very common here, and it gets on my last nerve.

it boils down to this, my 'country' acquaintance's say i speak like a 'wigger' or a 'city boy' is a common term from them too.
my 'city' acquaintance's say i speak like a 'hick' or 'country boy'

i have noticed people from ohio have more of a 'yank' type of accent while it still has a southern feel to it.most people from ohio i mean, of course not everyone has the same speaking voice.

Thanks, man. So yeah I guess overall it's kinda like I imagined. There is a huge variety of accents and depending on geographical location, experience, raw intelligence, linguistic skills people are able to or not able to determine an accent up to a certain extent.

Like, someone from Ohio will realize you and your McCreary county friends have a southern accent. He will realize yours is a bit different, but doesn't know why, whereas your McCreary friends will know someone from a big city in Ohio and someone from rural Ohio (assuming these two Ohio-ists have different accents) have different accents as opposed to GA, but aren't able to distinguish between city-Ohio and rural-Ohio.

It's of course much the same in other countries, but since the USA is, especially compared to Europe, so stretched and sometimes isolated, there is an immense variation of accents, in multiple tiers and levels.

I guess it just depends on your own location, experience and skill how much you can determine.

Thanks, though!

Reading or listening to the news?

When reading the American newspapers, what you typically find is 6th grade level vocabulary.

Yes, like the BBC newsreaders. Almost no one in England speaks like that. But it's often seen as the archetypical form of British English. Tip top, cheerio, Mary Watkins, good day sir!

I'm willing to entertain the idea that to acquire power, it's necessary to have a reasonable amount of intelligence and good judgment.
Thats true, but could you also entertain the idea that it can also be taken by having a bigger gun than the next guy?
(having a bigger gun, doesnt make you intelligent if you dont try other ways first)

I was hoping you'd keep the discussion at a government level. But, let's assume you mean gun = nukes.

Well, the means by which you acquire nuclear weapons require a significant amount of intelligence. :D
