Atheist kills mother whilst reciting Dawkins

There's a gaping chasm of difference between telling children about Christmas or Easter and adults believing in pie in the sky.

The difference is so great, my penis can't even cross it, and you lot should REALLY stop banging on about it now. It all stopped making much sense two pages ago.

I agree.

I asked how atheists on here would treat death with their children. I am not going to say his mum is no longer, that's the cold harsh truth, get over it. And I highly doubt anyone else would, no matter what they say.

I am honest with my son. I tell him there is no god, then we watch documentaries, and talk about Darwin. I also mention how religion (Christianity) says the world is 6000 years old, but that science dates it at about 4 Billion, and therefore that concludes that the bible is bullshit.

This also makes me think of another question to those without religion. What will you do with your loved ones bodies when they die.... and what do you want done with yours.... I have already told everyone I love that I don't want to be buried, nor do I want any religious service.... But I don't know how I would treat others bodies...

I think that is everyone's personal choice. Me, I'm going to be cryogenically frozen. :)

Cremated, I guess. Also depending on how I die, maybe there are some parts that can be recycled. I'm a donor and I think everyone should be one (and people who refuse, often religious people, should be promptly excluded from receiving donor organs). I don't particularly care what happens with my body after I die, I'm not inhabiting it anymore.

Im no exactly sure what i would do in that position. I guess i would "just" tell my kid that his/her mother is gone, that shes dead.

In regard to Darrens second question, i would do whatever my loved ones wanted to be done with them after they died. On my personal behalf, i have no problem with getting buried (without the religious gibberish talk/service. I dont even know if its possible.lol). I think this is more "classy" than getting cremated.lol

I don't like the thought of rotting when buried. I'd rather be burnt.

I also want to be scattered.... Or kept by a psycho relative on the fireplace.

I'd use the ashes to fertilize a marijuana plant and then smoke that shit. Reincarnation, baby.

^^ UP North, there are a lot of Catholics. They aren't as outspoken, relative to their Protestant counterparts down South. Never once did I hear a student say "pray for so-and-so" in high school. In college, all the time.
I heard it all the time in HS.. lol. I heard it in college and still hear it now.

I wouldn't bullshit my kids in that situation. Life is hard. The only way is to be strong, accept that shit happens, and move on. That's what I did.
I agree completely. I won't be telling my kids of any Toothfairy or Santa Claus as if they actually exist. I will tell them about the concepts and let them decide on their own how they want to interpret that information. I think people forget that children can think and form opinions. Just so few are ever required to. As much as I dislike children, I have had some amazing conversations with a few kids at the group home I tutor at.. all under the age of like 12. They have amazing perception and ideas. BUT we stifle that by lying to them and making them lie in turn.

Plus, the world IS a magical place. We don't have to make up nonsense to prove it's magical. Trees "die" and come back to life with the seasons, the sun disappears and shows back up again, a dog gives birth to puppies, making up stories, singing silly sounds.. all this can be "magical" and it all exists. Why isn't that good enough? *shrug*

Here, I like to teach my son the truth. It's not magic, it's science. And we watch documentaries together that explain it.

When he is 10 I will tell him Santa wasn't real. But for now, with a 3 year old, Santa is fun.

I bet you change your mind when you actually have kids. Christmas is a magical time for kids. They love seeing Santa and watching all the films. To say there is no Santa and to tell them "concepts. Is rather ridiculous, and mean.

Imagination is important too. Not just truth. Kids love to use their imaginations and to dream. Why work against that.

I'm not saying tell the kid it IS magic, lol. Like some mystical genie is waving his hands and making things happen. hehehe I just meant the process can certainly seem "magical".

*shrug* who's to say? If I'm ever a parent *shudders* I may change my mind. I doubt it though. I have 3 good friends with small children of varying ages. They haven't lied to the kids about Santa or anything similar and the children seem perfectly happy with Christmas still. I think the idea of Santa and a lot of the traditional things that take place are much moreso for the parents as opposed to being for the sake of the child. Unless you get a kid when it's like 4 and has already had some experience with these things, how would it know or care about the "importance" of a holiday? It understands that the holiday and traditions are important only b/c they're important to the parent.

I'm not sure how telling a kid, from the beginning that there isn't a Santa is mean. Now, on the other hand, telling someone else's kid at the age of like 5 that there's no Santa is certainly mean. But if the child never knew or believed in Santa to begin with.. why would it care?

Nothing wrong with imagination, with making up stories and people and games. But the important part, to me (at this point in my life, IDK about the future), is that my child is able to distinguish make believe from reality.

I'm not attacking your POV, it's just different from what I think I would do is all.

You do realize what makes the beauty of childhood is innocence... right? Not all kids have the kind of resilience you might have had.

There's a difference between innocence and being ignorant of how the world works. I don't see any point in lying to a child. Children are smarter than you think. Especially nowadays.

I had resilience because I accepted the truth for what it was and that nothing could change the situation. What's the other option?
