Have you ever had someone see the problems in your life ALOT clearer than the problems in their own? It's always easier to be on the outside looking in.
And you really think a tv-clip is going to accomplish this?

Like I said, if it's come this far that we need a tv-commercial to convince someone that getting the snot beat out of you every night isn't actually your fault...then, well...

I'm not saying directly after seeing this she is going to go pack her suitcase, check into a hotel and contact her lawyer. But it MIGHT get her thinking about it in a different way, it MIGHT switch on some lights to her family & friends to speak to her, it MIGHT get other people who don't know someone in a domestic violence situation to offer their time to Women's shelters and it MIGHT help show young girls from the start this is wrong. Might, might mean it doesn't happen but its worth the shot. And this is the last time I'm going to explain it Mr Suicidal.

it's an awareness campaign. the purpose is to show that they are "not alone" in this issue. sometimes it's comforting to know that there are people out there who truly know how you feel. it does a lot.

You used to be a hardass. Fuck you for becoming a little sissy girl.

All of you who find domestic violence funny are immature fucks.

You wouldn't be saying that if it happened to somebody close to you.

First time you heard it?

Yea it was the first time I heard it.

But to respond to Katie. I am not laughing at domestic abuse and I think it is wrong and I understand the purpose of the awareness campaign.

I have to agree with Duke on 2 things.

1) People who stay with an abusive spouse are idiots.

2) Ill-matic's gotten soft. Wtf happened dude.

I don't think domestic abuse is funny at all, but I'm ranting against the way the issue, and other issues, are brought forth in stuff like this tv-clip.

If you wanted to make a t.v. clip about domestic abuse, why not throw in a few brief testimonies of actual victims who have overcome the situation, instead of a clip where Kiera gets the shit smacked out of her (which ought to be a capital offense, actually).

I mean, really, I'm no film director, not even a movie buff, but I can think of 10 more sensible ways to get their point across.

Like other people pointed out the solution isn't always as simple as simply walking out. Although they're victimized by the guy beating them these women are a victim of their own shortcomings as well. But even if these women themselves are actually a part of the problem that doesn't mean donations are ridiculous.

Any honest attempt at solving this problem is admirable but that doesn't mean this video isn't stupid. It's not about awareness at all, it's about shocking people into donations. I don't have a problem with that but the image of a starving HIV-infected child makes me want to donate, watching Keira Knightley getting beat up without any context whatsoever... not so much. I'm not into the "there are more important causes I can donate to" argument but if this video is a reflection of how effective this foundation is at using its funds then I see the merit in not wanting to give this particular foundation money. Like Duke said they could've done a far better job, especially since their goal was simply to goad people into donating.

I understand that you can't make a documentary out of a 2-minute clip but I'd like to see a more realistic take on this issue... or at least a video where I don't expect Freddie Kruger to jump out of the closet. Just like it's more complex than these women simply being stupid, there's more to it than these guys simply being pieces of shit. Not saying I'd ever defend the man in this situation but it might be useful to get some genuine insight into the situation (of both people involved) in order to find the most effective ways of dealing with it. These aren't isolated cases, we need a little bit more than a bad infomercial in 2009.

Not saying this video is useless but it did cost money to make, money that could've been used in a far more effective way.

I think it was a more abstract look at it. I don't know about other countries but in Australia we've had the testimonial thing, although one of them I'm 98% sure was actors speaking for the Victim then actors speaking for the attacker it wasn't very good and people joked more about the slogan.
I can see why the director went this approach with this video, although things he/she should have changed was "sweet-pot" and "gentle heart" and the silhouette of him in the window.
And the other thing is it might be trying to represent the situation to actors themselves. No doubt it's set up that way but there's been stories of jealous partners getting pissed off when the spouse does a love scene or romancey type movie ala Hallie Berry -- Not saying he beat her for it but its possible it happened to someone else.. Or even up and coming actors.
